(Denmark & Gambia)

Ba Balance is the name of the Danish born guitarist Preben Carlsen’s first own project. The music dives into a world of guitar sounds and African percussion. Highlighting the interplay between Carlsen and the Gambian percussion player Salieu Dibba. The two old friends are grooving and improvising on ten remarkable songs on the album 'Around the Crocodile Pond'. The result is natural, easy and funky music.

If the Mali guitar icon Ali Farka Touré had gotten a son in Denmark, it could well have been Preben Carlsen, the Danish top guitarist of African music.

Respect, love and dedication to African music and guitar heros like Ali, shows clearly in Preben Carlsen's style. Developed during 20 years of traveling, meetings and significant collaborations with African masters of the likes of Toumani Diabate, A.B. Crentsil, Bassekou Kouyate, Paa Bobo Jobarteh, Koo Nimo, Tata Dindin, late Momo Wandel, Ballét Djoliba, Ba Cissoko and Harouna Samake, to name a few. As if those names will not make your jaw drop, Carlsen also toured with the american funk guru Pee Wee Ellis. In Scandinavia Carlsen has been the steady guitar player of soloists like Dawda Jobarteh and Moussa Diallo and highly sought after for freelance gigs and sessions.

On the 2020 album 'Around The Crocodile Pond', the music flows with polyrhythmic elegance as the tunes weaves organically in raw circular road movie-style Afro Blues.

The music is iconographic reminiscent of wild, wide landscapes, from the deep mangrove forests in the Southern states of USA, to the flat red mountains in the Mali desert, passing rivers and colorfull water carriers, and with a dramatic blue sky above it all.

The experiment was to make 2 people sound like a whole band, by using various guitar effects and an octopus’tic percussion set up, the idea has succeeded. Due to Carlsen's and Dibba's intuitive way of playing together and understanding each other, the music grows from their artistic interaction.

Live this project makes a perfect fit for the after party of any festival to keep the dancing going or as a spicy surprise to any kinds of events. The fun the two musicians share on stage, is contagious.

The album will not let you sit still although you will want to listen over and over to catch all the subtle details.
