Gamelan Salukat x Jan Kadereit 'ÁSHIRA' 

Newest Album by renowned Gamelan orchestra Salukat and award winning composer Jan Kadereit. Salukat isone of the most acclaimed ensembles dedicated to contemporary ethnological music in the world. Listed in“25 best classical pieces of 2022” by the NEW YORK TIMES with their composition and performance“Likad”, they have been the focus of multiple studies and lectures (Tenzer, Smith) and toured worldwide. Afterhaving won awards for their traditional Gong Kebyar music, Salukat radically moved towards new music in2007, becoming a major force in contemporary music. Since then, Salukat combines two sets of instrumentsthat are tuned to different seven-note scales, therefore enriching the tonal and harmonic possibilities ofGamelan music. After releasing six critically acclaimed albums, they invited composer/percussionist JanKadereit in 2023 to collaborate on new music. This resulting album is full of unheard harmonies and beautifullyintertwined melodies. It ranges from meditative pieces rich in sounds to burstful, highly joyous and energeticpieces that bring out the skill of the virtuosic musicians. They seem to effortlessly bend the flow of time,seemingly dancing through multiple rhythms like on the title track Áshira. In the same composition, thedifferently tuned sets of instruments are combined to create colors that no other ensemble in the world canreplicate. A documentary about Salukat and the making of Áshira will be released alongside the album,deepening the immersion into this unique project and offering fascinating insights into this world of sounds.
